Jaisalmer & the Thar Desert
Jaisalmer · Sam Dunes · Bikaner — The far-western desert of Rajasthan, built around the golden sandstone city of Jaisalmer — its living fort, its lattice-carved havelis, and the Sam dunes where a camel ride into the sunset and a night under the stars remain genuinely magical. We add Bikaner for its own fort and the extraordinary Karni Mata rat temple, and cross the Thar honestly, stating the long desert drives up front. The best of it is timed for the low golden light the "golden city" is named for. A compact, atmospheric desert circuit.

Day 1 Arrive JaisalmerAirport/Station → Fort
- Transfer & hotel/haveli check-in
- Jaisalmer Fort — the living "Sonar Qila"
- Patwon ki Haveli & the merchant mansions
- Gadisar Lake at sunset
Jaisalmer's fort is one of the very few in the world still inhabited — a honey-coloured citadel of temples, havelis and homes rising from the desert. The afternoon takes in the fort and the astonishing carved merchant havelis below it; Gadisar Lake catches the golden hour. The whole city glows at sunset, which is when it earns its name.

- Folk music, dinner & overnight at a desert camp
Morning at the royal cenotaphs of Bada Bagh and the eerie abandoned village of Kuldhara, then out to the Sam dunes for the desert night everyone comes for — a camel ride over the ridges into the sunset, Rajasthani folk music and dance around the fire, and a night in a comfortable Swiss-tent camp under a huge desert sky. We're honest that Sam gets busy at peak times; quieter Khuri is an alternative we can arrange.

- Junagarh Fort — never conquered
- Bikaner's old-city havelis
A genuine desert-crossing day, honestly stated, to Bikaner. Its Junagarh Fort is unusual in that it was never taken — a beautifully preserved complex of painted palaces on the plain rather than a hill. The old city's red-sandstone havelis and famous bhujia snack markets fill the evening.
🛏 Overnight: Bikaner
Day 4 Bikaner — Karni Mata & camelsDeshnok → camel farm
- Karni Mata (the "rat temple") at Deshnok
- National Research Centre on Camels
- Lunch
- Lalgarh Palace & museum
Bikaner's two singular sights: the Karni Mata temple at Deshnok, where thousands of sacred rats are revered (genuinely unusual — we prepare you for it), and the government camel-breeding farm that explains the animal at the heart of desert life. The red-sandstone Lalgarh Palace rounds off the day.

Good to know
Important information
- •Desert crossings are long — the Jaisalmer–Bikaner leg is around six hours, stated honestly and broken with stops.
- •The Sam dunes get busy at peak season and on weekends; the quieter Khuri dunes are an alternative we can arrange.
- •Desert-camp tents are comfortable (Swiss-tent style) but this is the desert — nights are cold in winter and facilities simpler than a hotel.
- •The Karni Mata "rat temple" is genuinely unusual (barefoot among sacred rats) — we prepare you so it is a wonder, not a shock.
- •October–March is the pleasant window; summers in the Thar are extremely hot.

Questions
Package FAQs
Is a desert-camp night comfortable?
Yes, in a good Swiss-tent camp — proper beds, attached washrooms, folk music and dinner under the stars. It is still the desert, so winter nights are cold and it is simpler than a hotel; we set honest expectations and book quality camps.
Sam or Khuri dunes?
Sam is the classic and more set up (and busier); Khuri is quieter and more rustic. We'll match it to whether you want the lively camel-and-folk experience or solitude.
How does this combine with the rest of Rajasthan?
Beautifully — Jaisalmer sits naturally after Jodhpur, so this desert loop extends the Heritage Circuit westward. We can join them into one longer itinerary.
Is it family-friendly?
Very — the living fort, camel rides, the camel farm and the desert camp all delight children, though the long Bikaner drive needs planning for younger kids.
