Sundarbans Wildlife
Package ID: TG-IN-001665
Kolkata · Sundarbans delta — The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest on earth, a vast tidal maze at the mouth of the Ganges and the only mangrove tiger habitat in the world. This short trip pairs a taste of Kolkata with two days cruising the creeks by boat among crocodiles, water monitors, kingfishers and — for the very lucky few — the elusive swimming tiger. We are completely honest that tiger sightings here are rare (the forest is dense and the cats are shy), so the trip is sold on the extraordinary ecosystem, the birdlife and the boat journey itself, with any tiger a genuine stroke of fortune.

- Victoria Memorial & the Maidan
- Howrah Bridge, Mullick Ghat flower market & Kalighat
- Bengali dinner
A half-day taste of Kolkata — the marble Victoria Memorial, the great cantilever of Howrah Bridge, the riverside flower market and the Kalighat temple. The former imperial capital is a city of grand decay and intense street life, and a fine, characterful prelude to the wild delta.

Out of the city to the delta's edge and onto the water. The rest of the day is spent cruising the tidal creeks — this is a boat safari, not a jeep one — past mudbanks where estuarine crocodiles and water monitors bask, spotted deer at the fringe and superb birdlife. The Sajnekhali watchtower and its permit-controlled reserve are the gateway to the core.

A full day deep in the mangroves. Dawn is the prime wildlife hour; the Dobanki canopy walk and Sudhanyakhali tower overlook waterholes where tigers occasionally come to drink — occasionally being the honest word. A village visit meets the honey collectors and fisherfolk who share this dangerous forest and worship Bonbibi, its guardian deity.
🛏 Overnight: Sundarbans

Good to know
Important information
- •Tiger sightings in the Sundarbans are rare — the forest is dense, tidal and the cats are famously elusive. The trip is about the mangrove ecosystem, birdlife and boat journey; a tiger is a genuine stroke of luck, and we say so plainly.
- •This is a boat safari, not a jeep safari — you explore by launch on the tidal creeks, governed by the tides.
- •Forest permits are required and arranged; carry a government photo ID (foreign nationals need additional permits — tell us nationalities).
- •October–March is the season; the monsoon brings high water and many closures, and cyclone activity can affect this coast.
- •Accommodation is simple eco-resort or boat standard — comfort expectations should be honest.

Questions
Package FAQs
Will we see a tiger?
Almost certainly not — and any operator who implies otherwise is misleading you. Sundarbans tigers are among the hardest to see anywhere. The reward is the world's largest mangrove forest, its crocodiles, monitors and spectacular birds, and the boat journey itself. We're completely upfront about this.
Is it a jeep or boat safari?
Boat — the Sundarbans is a water world of tidal creeks, explored entirely by launch. That is part of what makes it unique among Indian wildlife trips.
Is it suitable for families?
Yes for families who enjoy boats, birds and wilderness rather than guaranteed big animals; the canopy walks and village visits engage children. It is offbeat and gentle-paced.
When should we go?
October–March. The monsoon brings high water and closures, and this coast can see cyclones; the cool dry season is both comfortable and best for birdlife.
