Sikkim & Darjeeling

Package ID: TG-MS-001056

Darjeeling · Pelling · Gangtok — The eastern Himalaya on a comfortable loop from Bagdogra — Darjeeling for the tea gardens and the Kanchenjunga sunrise from Tiger Hill, Pelling for its monasteries and the mountain full in view, and Gangtok for Sikkim's bright hill capital. Distances are short in kilometres but slow on winding hill roads, which we plan around honestly. The great third-highest peak on earth is the star, and the whole trip is arranged so you see it at its clearest hours — cloud permitting, which in the mountains it must always be.

  2. Check-in & tea
  3. Chowrasta & the Mall on foot

Up from the plains into the old hill station, the road climbing past tea estates and crossing the famous toy-train line. The afternoon eases you in gently — Chowrasta, the pedestrian heart of Darjeeling, and the Mall as the light softens over the ridges.

Day 2 Darjeeling — Tiger Hill sunriseTiger Hill → tea gardens
  1. Tiger Hill for sunrise over Kanchenjunga (cloud permitting)
  2. Batasia Loop & the war memorial
  3. Ghoom Monastery & breakfast
  4. Happy Valley tea garden
  5. Himalayan Mountaineering Institute & zoo
  6. Toy-train joy ride (Darjeeling–Ghoom, subject to running)

The early alarm everyone remembers. Tiger Hill at dawn, when the first light hits Kanchenjunga and — on the clearest days — distant Everest, is the reason to be here; we're honest that clouds sometimes win, as they do in every mountain. The rest of the day is the classic Darjeeling round: the tea garden, the mountaineering institute, and the heritage toy train that made the town famous.

  3. Pelling Skywalk & the Chenrezig statue

Across into Sikkim and up to Pelling, which enjoys perhaps the most head-on view of Kanchenjunga of the whole trip. The afternoon's glass Skywalk and the giant Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) statue above it are the introduction; the mountain itself dominates the morning tomorrow.

Day 4 Pelling — monasteries & fallsPemayangtse → Rabdentse
  1. Dawn Kanchenjunga view from the hotel
  2. Pemayangtse Monastery — one of Sikkim's oldest
  3. Rabdentse ruins — the old royal capital
  4. Lunch
  5. Kanchenjunga Falls & Rimbi

Pelling's full day. Pemayangtse is among the oldest and most important monasteries in Sikkim, its wooden sculptures genuinely remarkable; the nearby Rabdentse ruins, reached on a short forest walk, were the kingdom's second capital. Clear mornings open with Kanchenjunga filling the window — the reason two nights here earn their place.

Across to Sikkim's capital. Gangtok is a bright, orderly hill city, and its pedestrianised MG Marg — no cars, no litter, benches and cafés — is a genuinely pleasant evening stroll. A gentler travelling day into the busiest, most connected base of the trip.

  2. Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir
  3. Return to Gangtok
  4. Enchey Monastery / Hanuman Tok & city viewpoints

A high day trip to the glacial Tsomgo Lake, sacred and often frozen into spring. It needs a permit, which we arrange, and it is entirely weather-dependent — the road to it closes in bad conditions, and we tell you the real odds rather than a promise. If the pass is shut we substitute Gangtok's monasteries and viewpoints, which are lovely in their own right.

Good to know

Important information

  • •Kanchenjunga and Tiger Hill views depend on clear weather — we time everything for the best hours but the mountains keep their own counsel.
  • •Tsomgo Lake needs a permit (arranged) and the road closes in bad weather; we substitute Gangtok sightseeing if it is shut.
  • •Foreign nationals need additional permits for parts of Sikkim and cannot visit some areas (e.g. Tsomgo/Nathula) — tell us nationalities up front.
  • •Hill roads are winding and slow; the Gangtok–Bagdogra descent needs an early start for afternoon flights.
  • •Carry warm layers year-round; high points like Tsomgo are cold even in summer.

Questions

Package FAQs

Will we definitely see Kanchenjunga?

On clear mornings, spectacularly — from Tiger Hill, Pelling and even Gangtok. But it is a Himalayan peak and cloud sometimes wins; we plan for the clearest hours and are honest that no operator can guarantee the weather.

Is the toy train included?

A Darjeeling–Ghoom joy-ride is built into the plan subject to it running on your date (schedules and steam/diesel vary). Tickets are a small separate cost; we help you book them.

Can foreign passport holders do this trip?

Mostly yes, with extra permits we arrange — but some Sikkim areas (like Tsomgo and Nathula) have restrictions or are closed to foreign nationals. Tell us nationalities when you enquire so we plan it correctly.

Is it suitable for older travellers and kids?

Yes — the pace is moderate and most sightseeing is drive-up. The one early start is Tiger Hill, which is optional. We can soften the itinerary on request.

When is the best time?

March–May for rhododendrons and clear spells, October–December for the crispest mountain views. The monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings cloud, rain and landslip risk on hill roads.
