Khichan, a village near Phalodi in the Thar, is world-famous for the thousands of demoiselle cranes ("kurjan") that winter here, fed daily by the local community in an extraordinary conservation tradition. From November the fields and dunes fill with the birds in a great wildlife spectacle.
