Shimla & Manali Hills
Package ID: TG-IN-001083
Shimla · Manali · Solang — The classic Himachal hill combination, run from Chandigarh up to Shimla, across to Manali and the Solang Valley. Mountain distances are short in kilometres but slow in hours — that is the honest truth of hill driving, and we plan the days around it rather than promising times the road won't keep. Meals are on a half-board (MAP) basis because good independent restaurants are thin on the ground at hill resorts, so dinner at the hotel is simply the practical choice. It is a trip built for cool air, deodar forest and, in the right season, snow at Solang.

- The Ridge & Mall Road on foot
- Christ Church & sunset over the hills
Up from the plains into the old summer capital of the Raj. The climb is the day's work; by afternoon you're walking the Ridge and the pedestrian Mall, the colonial-era heart of Shimla, with the church lit against the dusk. The heritage Kalka–Shimla toy train is a lovely alternative for part of the ascent if your timings allow — we'll advise.
🛏 Overnight: Shimla
Day 2 Shimla & KufriKufri → Viceregal Lodge
- Kufri — hill viewpoints & activities
- Lunch
- Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study)
- Jakhoo Temple & the hilltop Hanuman
- Free evening on the Mall
A full day around Shimla. Kufri, a short drive out, gives you the higher viewpoints and, in season, snow; the Viceregal Lodge is a genuinely interesting stop — the summer seat of British power in India, where several partition-era decisions were taken. Jakhoo, on the town's highest hill, closes the day with the big valley view.
🛏 Overnight: Shimla
Day 3 Shimla → ManaliShimla → Manali
- Route
- Shimla → Manali
- Distance
- ~250 km
- Travel time
- ~7 hrs (approx.)
- Mode
- Private car via the Sutlej & Beas valleys

- 04:00 PM
- Alternative
- Lunch & river stops en route
- Early start — this is the long driving day
- Sundernagar / Pandoh Dam river stops
- Lunch at Mandi
- Arrive Manali & check-in
The one genuinely long transfer of the trip, and we say so plainly — around seven hours down one valley and up the next, following the Sutlej and then the Beas. We break it properly with river and lunch stops so it is a travelling day with texture rather than a slog. An early start is essential; hill roads punish a late one.
🛏 Overnight: Manali
Day 4 Manali — Solang ValleySolang & Old Manali
- Solang Valley — ropeway, snow & adventure activities
- Lunch
- Hadimba Devi Temple in the deodar forest
- Old Manali & the Manu Temple
- Mall Road evening
The day everyone comes for. Solang Valley is Manali's adventure playground — ropeway, paragliding and, in winter and spring, snow. We keep the afternoon gentler with the ancient Hadimba temple, its dark wooden tower set among towering deodars, and the cafés of Old Manali. Note: access to Rohtang / Atal Tunnel beyond Solang depends on permits and weather, which we arrange and check honestly for your dates.
🛏 Overnight: Manali
Day 5 Manali — Atal Tunnel / Sissu (weather permitting)Atal Tunnel → Sissu
- Drive to the Atal Tunnel & into Lahaul (subject to weather/permits)
- Sissu village & waterfall
- Lunch & return
- Vashisht hot springs
- Free evening
Conditions permitting, the Atal Tunnel opens up the Lahaul valley on the far side of the range — a genuinely different, high-desert landscape at Sissu. This is entirely weather- and permit-dependent and we will not pretend otherwise: if the pass side is closed we substitute Naggar Castle and the Beas-side villages, which are lovely in their own right. Vashisht's hot springs are the reward at the end of either version.
🛏 Overnight: Manali
Day 6 Manali at leisureLocal Manali
- At leisure — Mall Road, cafés, riverside walks
- Optional Naggar Castle & the Roerich gallery
- Farewell dinner
A deliberately open day — the hills reward slowness and most travellers are glad of one unscheduled morning. Naggar, the old capital with its stone-and-wood castle and the Roerich art gallery, is the pick of the optional add-ons for those who want more; others simply enjoy the town and the river.
🛏 Overnight: Manali
Day 7 Manali → DepartureManali → Chandigarh / Airport
- Route
- Manali → Bhuntar Airport (KUU) or Chandigarh
- Distance
- ~50 km / ~300 km
- Travel time
- ~1h30m / ~8 hrs
- Mode
- Private car
- Depart
- As per plan
- Arrive
- —
- Alternative
- Fly from Bhuntar, or drive to Chandigarh for onward travel
- At the hotel
- Transfer for your onward journey — Bhuntar flight or the drive to Chandigarh
Depart the hills. Bhuntar (Kullu) airport is close but has limited, weather-sensitive flights; most travellers drive back to Chandigarh for a reliable onward connection. We plan the last day around your real departure, with an early start if the road to Chandigarh is on the cards.

Good to know
Important information
- •Mountain drives are slow — hours matter more than kilometres. Early starts are essential, especially the Shimla–Manali leg.
- •Snow at Solang and access beyond (Rohtang / Atal Tunnel) are entirely weather- and permit-dependent; we set honest expectations and arrange permits.
- •Half-board (dinner at the hotel) is standard here because independent dining is limited at hill resorts.
- •Carry warm layers even in summer — hill evenings are cold. Winter needs proper snow gear.
- •Bhuntar (Kullu) flights are limited and weather-sensitive; many travellers return via Chandigarh.

Questions
Package FAQs
Will we get snow?
Only honestly: December–March is the reliable snow window at Solang and Kufri; spring can have residual snow higher up. In summer you drive to the snow line rather than finding it in town. We match your dates to your expectations.
Is the Shimla–Manali drive really seven hours?
Yes, realistically, with stops — hill roads are slow. We start early and break it well. If you'd rather, we can add a midway night at Kullu or Naggar to split it.
Can older parents manage this trip?
Yes, with planning. The sightseeing is drive-up at most points; we can drop the longer walks and Solang activities and keep the pace gentle. Tell us the party and we adjust.
Is Rohtang Pass included?
Rohtang requires a separate permit, a fixed daily quota and clear weather — so it is never guaranteed. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu is the more reliable high-valley experience, itself weather-dependent. We arrange permits and are straight about the odds.
Why half-board and not just breakfast?
Because good standalone restaurants are scarce at hill resorts, so dinner at the hotel is simply the practical, better-value choice. You are free to eat out on the Mall Roads if you prefer.
